The 1st SCTE Golf Day, 28th October, 2003.
A New SCTE Event.
Organised at short notice by Frank Summerfield of Harmonic, the 1st SCTE Golf Day was held on Tuesday 28th October at Wokefield Park course near Reading.
The day went off extremely well with 25 players turning out for the event which was blessed with good weather albeit a little chilly at the start. Unfortunately, due to an oversight (not realising that the clocks went back the week before) a shortage of daylight meant that not everyone managed to complete all the 18 holes for the Stableford competition in the afternoon.
Teams were entered by Harmonic, Scientific Atlanta, Motorola, ADC, TVC and Pro-Bel; their guests included representatives from ntl, BBC and the On Demand Group. Also playing were representatives from TA Services, nCube and Tratec. We had apologies from numerous other companies that would have liked to have taken part but had conflicting activities for the same date.
The 9 Hole Team Texas Scramble Competition in the morning was won by the Harmonic/ntl: Convergent Systems team captained by Alistair "Bandit" Crook, they also went on to convincingly win the Team Stableford competition in the afternoon.
The Longest Drive competition was won by ntl's Mark Harrisson who took home a bottle of Malt Whisky kindly donated by Pro-Bel. The Closest-to-the-Pin competition was won by Simon Tooks from the BBC, who won a waterproof jacket, donated by ADC.![]()

Sanda Squire, individual Stableford winner and Simon Tooks, Closest to the Pin winner.A Worthy Winner
The individual winner of the Stableford Competition was our only lady playing, Sandra Squire from Pro-Bel, who managed to win by one point over ntl's Ian Clark. Sandra won a Cut Glass Decanter and glasses donated by Harmonic BAN and Ian received a Mobile phone donated by Motorola. Many thanks to the other companies that donated prizes. These were shared out to other deserving teams and individuals for various dubious exploits.
Thanks must also go to Dave Catton, whose help was invaluable in deciphering the Stableford scores at the end of the day; some people's handwriting is atrocious.
In summary, the day went well, everyone enjoyed themselves and the next SCTE Golf Day, tentatively scheduled for Spring 2004, should be even better.
Plans for 2004
The Society would like to thank Frank Summerfield for organising the event at short notice and also the companies who provided prizes and competitors.
