The Society's Benelux Section Lecture Meeting, Spring 2006

The Society's Benelux section held its Spring 2006 Lecture Meeting on 21st March.

The Spring Lecture meeting of the Benelux SCTE group was hosted by Hulskamp Audiovisueel. The Chairman, Mr. Aart Verbree, welcomed over 30 members and guests to this Lecture Day held in a professional studio environment with a huge (HDTV) screen displayed on one side the speaker and his presentation on the other. Everyone was impressed by the high quality pictures; a direct introduction to High Definition. Hulskamp staff cameras and an editing unit to provide professional support for all the presentations.

Ronald Janssen

Ronald Janssen, Adjunct Directeur Rental & Facilities
Introduction from the Hosts.

Mr. Roland Janssen, Adjunct Directeur Rental & Facilities, introduced Hulskamp by explaining their activities in the world of professional large screen presentations at show/promotions events, commercials etc. With a background in the film industry, this company provides a wide range of rental equipment for film and TV recordings, but also for product presentations and music events. Short demos were given to demonstrate the high quality standard of their productions.
 
 
Aart Verbree's Guide to CATV

In the first technical paper, the Chairman Aart Verbree proved his long history in CATV by presenting a historic overview of the TV development, indicating that as long ago as 1938 the industry regarded the pictures they could transmit at that time as "high definition", posing the question of what does this really mean today. He then provided comprhensive overview of what HDTV now means, what home equipment can be purchased today for HDTV and what can we expect for the near future.
 
 
 
  Cameras for HDTV

Mr. Marcel Erlich, Manager Business Solutions, Hulskamp explained in detail the various developments in camera technique, referring to the different HD standards. His presentation expanded on the previous paper to gave a complete picture of the developments in the current HD environment.
 
 
IPTV and HD

Mr. Sjef van Berlo, Consultant Carrier Networks, Siemens, covered the "PSTN" part of the industry and how IPTV was tackling the HDTV market. He explained how KPN were looking at this market and what their plans were for the future. It was interesting to learn the role of Siemens and the plans of KPN in tackling the problem of transporting large high speed data streams to the end user.

Headends for HDTV

After a lunch hosted by Hulskamp, Mr. Tim DeVreese, Market Manager Broadband Headends, Scientific-Atlanta, concluded the Lecture Day with a description of the head end side of the HDTV technology. In- and outs on encoding technology as well as the combination of existing head end equipment with HDTV technology was covered.
 
 
Another Stimulating Event.

The day was voted a great success by all those attending and our thanks go again to Hulskamp for hosting the event.
