THE SCTE BENELUX LECTURES AT IBC 2008


Once again the SCTE Benelux Group organised a series of lectures at IBC in Amsterdam on the afternoon of Monday 15th September.  The session was be held in Room A at the RAI Congress Centre.

The general theme was ‘Challenges for Cable in the Broadband Era’ and the Chairman, Rien Baan was be joined by a panel consisting of:

Mr. Wim De Ketelaere,   CEO Excentis,  Belgium who gave a talk on “EuroDOCSIS 3.0: Features and Applications”
EuroDOCSIS 3.0 is the newest standard in the EuroDOCSIS series. The technology enables the delivery of >100Mbit/s services to the home. By adding support for IPv6 and improving the multicast features, 3.0 makes cable networks ready for the future. This talk explained the basics of EuroDOCSIS 3.0 and shows how compatibility with 2.0 systems is achieved.

Wim De Ketelaere

Mr Mark Bugajski, VP Advanced Technologies, ARRIS gave a presentation on “IPTV in Cable”
An overview of IPTV services, HFC architectures to support it and discussions of options to implement. The current and future IPTV services was discussed with an eye to their dependencies on QoS and bandwidth required. The modern architecture was desbrided that draws on the existing cable standards.

Mark Bugajski

Mr Nick Fielibert, CTO, EMEA & APAC, Scientifi c-Atlanta Europe NV talked on the subject of  “Implementing Interactive Video and Advanced Services”
Most cable operators are offering triple play services. For the TV service, interactivity is becoming essential to allow for competitive services. Interactive TV includes services like Video on Demand, catch-up TV etc, but also bringing TV to other screens. He discussed the various ways of how these services can be delivered in new and legacy networks and how the economics play in each of those. He looked at options such as IPTV over cable (V-DOC), TS based xOD, SDV and connected home.

Nick Fielibert

Dr. Michiel Peters,  Snr Business Consultant TNO, The Netherlands gave a paper on “The Operator Perception of the Cable Network Challenge”
The cable network migration challenge has been studied by a consortium of operators, vendors and knowledge institutes within the work of the ReDeSign project. The project is an FP7 funded initiative started in February 2008. A first activity undertaken was an assessment of European cable network technologies and of the operators’ understanding about the future evolution of both networks and services. In this contribution preliminary results and observations of this survey were presented.
