The Benelux Chapter of the SCTE met once again at IBC.
This meeting followed the highly successful Spring 2004 Lecture Meeting held on 26th May.
This was our fifth European lecture meeting and the third to be organised by the Benelux section.
This SCTE Benelux lecture presentation was organised by Mr Rien Baan, our Benelux Secretary.
SCTE President, Dr. Roger Blakeway, summarises the day's papers.

SCTE Benelux Chairman, Aart Verbree, and Secretary, Rien Baan.Modern Broadband Technologies.
On 14 September 2003, the final day of an extremely successful IBC conference and exhibition at the RAI Exhibition and Conference Centre, Amsterdam, the Benelux group of the SCTE ran their third lecture meeting (the fifth Eurolecture meeting). The meeting was held in conjunction with IBC who provided the facilities as part of the ongoing partnership with the SCTE and as an added value event for attendees of the IBC Exhibition.
The event was attended by nearly a hundred delegates who enjoyed a full programme of lectures on the theme 'Modern Broadband Technologies'. The meeting was chaired by Aart Verbree, Chairman of SCTE Benelux, supported by his committee, Herman Grooten, Jan van Gameren and SCTE Benelux Secretary Rien Baan.
The Morning Session
The first paper of the day was presented by Alastair MacMaster, CTO of Technetix, on the subject of 'Moving Fibre Deeper into the Network' This dealt with the application of PONs (Passive Optical Networks) to bring fibre into the home or business.
The next paper, entitled 'IPTV Developments in the Netherlands' was given by Peter Oskam of Rekam. Peter gave an overview of the technology of IPTV and its natural place in TV delivery. He then went on to review the deployment of IPTV on a global scale before analysing it's possible introduction in the Netherlands.
The morning session ended with an excellent paper on the 'Application of RPR (Resilient Packet Ring) Technology' given by Leslie John Rysdale of C-COR Electronics. Starting with the premise that many new services (VoIP, games etc.) needed high resilience and low latency he showed how the these features, to be found in SDH deployment, could also be realised in an IP environment.
The morning concluded with a Buffet lunch, provided by the Society, which was much appreciated by those attending and provided a valuable opportunity to network with colleagues in the industry.![]()

Marc Itzkowitz, Director of Project Management with SupportsoftThe Afternoon Session.
The afternoon session began with Wim de Ketelaere, CTO of tComLabs, dealing with the problem of 'Bringing QoS to the Home with Euro-PacketCable Multimedia' Wim was concerned with expanding the existing 'single link' QoS implementations into a service offering that encompassed the end to end chain.
The day ended with yet another excellent paper given by Marc Itzkowitz, Director of Project Management with Supportsoft, with the title 'Accelerating Profitable Customer Adoption of Broadband'. Marc presented an a picture of triple play customer support in the typical, nightmare environment, to be found in most providers operations; Almost every problem resulting in a truck roll. By integrating a 'smart' installation procedure with CSRs ability to have windows into stb, network and application data, many problems could be sorted out quickly and in many cases allowed pro-active maintenance even before the customer was aware of a problem.
Thanks.
All authors and presenters are to be congratulated on a series of interesting and topical papers which maintained the SCTEs reputation of providing technical presentations with minimal commercial overtones.
This fifth lecture meeting organised for the Benelux members of the SCTE is a further indication of the benefits available to cable telecommunication engineers wherever they are.
