The SCTE and the Broadband Stakeholder Group.
The Broadband Stakeholder Group.
What is the BSG?
The Broadband Stakeholder Group (BSG) is Government's key advisory group on promoting the roll-out and take-up of broadband services. It provides advice on the government strategy to meet its target for the UK to have the most extensive and competitive broadband market in the G7 by 2005.
Members of the Society should find the work of the BSG relevant, particularly its 'Wireless' working group.
The following is taken directly from the BSG website. The site itself contains a lot more information and reports on the development of broadband in the UK.
"The BSG seeks to act as a critical, knowledgeable friend of government, and in doing so will:"The BSG represents a joint partnership between government and stakeholders, and this partnership is cemented through the strategic policy direction of the DTI.
- "identify the activities, projects, events, interdependencies and resources required to construct a robust strategic program for the delivery of broadband services towards 2005 and beyond,
- "measure on a continuous basis the progress of relevant projects and events towards the realisation of broadband Britain,
- "provide information to stakeholders regarding the progress of the Government's strategy and identify potential opportunities or bottlenecks that can help or hinder deployment and use of broadband services,
- "continuously review the appropriateness and feasibility of the Government's strategy as a whole, and
- "act as a public face of UK broadband to all stakeholders, particularly the media.
"The BSG operates under the strategic direction of the independent chairpersonrperson, Keith Todd, the Executive, and the nine Working Groups and Subgroups. Intellect's role includes drafting broadband policy proposals, maintaining stakeholder relations and providing administrative support.
"Membership of the BSG is voluntary and is open to corporations and organisations throughout the broadband value chain. This includes, but is not limited to: broadband service providers; broadband product suppliers; members of the broadband content industry; central Government departments; local government and RDAs; consumers and consumer representatives; trade unions and trade associations."Annual Report
The BSG recently published its 'Third Annual Report and Strategic Recommendations, January 2004'.
A pdf of the report can be downloaded from the BSG website.
